Mojacar Angling Club (MAC) News

Saturday I went out with Mojacar's "Captain (Brian) Cuba", "Rocky Mike" from Vera and "Beachcomber H". We had a good day with plenty of Pandoras, Combers and Pickerel. No monsters even though the weather and sea conditions were close to perfect.

Wednesday I was out again on Brian's Garrucha based boat with himself, "Inflatable Andy" and again Mike. The weather and sea conditions were good, that is until midday when the wind, of course not forecast, whipped up. We couldn't hold bottom anchored in anything over 100 feet and that was a waste of time. Drift fishing was like fishing the English Channel on the fiercest of tides. We did have the pleasure of seeing a Sunfish flapping its tail on the surface of the water while sunbathing; it's a very special experience I for one treasure.

Another exceptional sight was Sea Bass coming out of the water two feet presumably chasing bait fish. Further inshore we could see bigger fish, we guessed Yellow Fin Tuna, clearing the water also. We tried towing three lures for an hour without success, a top spinning mepp type spinner, a small rapala diving only three feet or so and my bigger one which would have gone about nine feet down, all to no avail. What have we got to do to catch a fish trolling here in the Med?

Oh I nearly forget, on returning to the harbour and chucking in our unused bait we were visited by the biggest Mullet I've witnessed alive, I swear it must have weighed 7lbs, wouldn't eat it though!

"Captain (Graham) Gnome" was out on his boat with guests at the same time as us, "Irish Rover Paul" and his dad "Irish Rover Pauls's dad!" They didn't catch too many fish and we did a little better but only because we endured fishing deep water up to 850 feet. We landed lots of Pandoras and Andy had a good Twin Banded Beam. Mick boated two Scabbard-Fish at the same time and I think they are one of the most exciting fish to catch. Eel shaped with teeth that would scare the mother-in-law and skin so shiny and chrome-like you can see your face in it.

"London Bill" spent the week chasing Yellow Fin Tuna on Mojacar's beaches and rocks but was frustrated and had to make do with Sea Bass and Palometes.

"Casa Verde Barry" and "Birds Nest Phil" fished the Lorca Lake and struggled. The wind blew and it was freezing, Phil had one bite and missed it while Barry managed four fish, all Carp to 3lbs. Barry lost a big one, it took off and when it came to the end of his pole elastic and 8lb line it went PING, there was no stopping that one apparently!

"Baza Barry" and two mates fished Baza Lake and had Carp to 3lbs and Barbel not far short.
