This Neolithic figure called The Indalo man – which represents a man holding a rainbow, is thought to be a totem of mystical power, bringing good luck and
protection.

It first appeared in the Cave of Los Letreros in Velez Blanco which suggests that it is prehistoric in origin. It is regularly seen outside local houses to keep ‘the evil eye' at a distance, and to shield everyone from storms - a spirit with sufficient power to dominate the elements.
It seems that prehistoric people from the interior of the province moved to the coastal regions and brought their beliefs with them. Mojacar is the most Archaic town within this area and has conserved these traditions.

More recently the name was used by a group of artists and intellectuals who came to Mojacar in the 1940's, attracted by the mystique of the town.
The Mojacar Man has since been adopted by the whole province of Almeria.

The Iberians of the south – east called their lord almighty or god by the name of Indalo. The Iberian word INDA means powerful or strong and brave leaders were called IND-IBIL, IND – ORTES, etc.
The philosopher Eugenio D’Ors sums up this yearning for the infinite that is characteristic of the Restless Indalien spirit: "It springs from prehistory and stretches into eternity".
